PRESS RELEASE:
CELLULARONE MARKS 3G NETWORK LAUNCH WITH UNIQUE HAMILTON EVENT
Hamilton, Bermuda - September 30, 2009 - CellularOne today announced that it will stage a unique “Freeze” event during lunch hours on Thursday, October 1st and Friday, October 2nd in the City of Hamilton marking the launch of the company’s much-anticipated 3G/UMTS network. CellularOne’s 3G/UMTS network now places Bermuda’s cellular telecommunications technology on par with the most advanced networks available in other parts of the world.
The unique event will involve a troupe of 25 performers, donning CellularOne umbrellas and bags, ‘freeze’ at various locations on Hamilton sidewalks for 15 minutes. Coupons offering the chance to get free one month service and a SIM card upon purchasing or activating a 3G phone from CellularOne will then be handed out as the performers walk en route to the junction of Reid and Burnaby Street. Giveaways will also be handed out in front of CellularOne’s Reid and Burnaby Street stores.
Those in the City will be able to watch the Freeze event unfold between the hours of 12:30pm – 1:30pm on Thursday and 1:30pm – 2:30pm on Friday at some 10 Hamilton sidewalk locations, including Church Street (in front of City Hall) and Front Street (outside Bank of Bermuda HSBC’s head office).
CellularOne’s 3G/UMTS network will provide customers with unsurpassed functionality, including:
- SIM cards to enable customers to switch handsets and carry their contacts wherever they go;
- World-wide roaming in over 200 countries;
- Sophisticated handsets, such as the Apple iPhone 3G, Sony Z780 and Nokia E71;
- Video calling service which captures both video and voice of the other calling party; and
- Incredible download speeds of up to 3.6 Mpps - the fastest available on the island.
The company’s existing CDMA EVDO network will continue to operate alongside the new 3G platform, so that existing CellularOne customers who are happy with their current service will not be required to make a change.
CellularOne Chief Executive Officer Kurt Eve said: “This is an important day in CellularOne’s history as we have invested over $7M and a tremendous amount of manpower in the launch of our 3G network. We are also particularly pleased that we can introduce this innovative technology during our 10th Anniversary year. In fact, this trend is one of the fundamental values on which the company was founded and represents our ongoing commitment to provide our customers with the best products and services.”
To introduce their new 3G network, the company developed a unique ad campaign. Chief Operating Officer Frank Amaral commented: “The people of Bermuda will obviously benefit most from our 3G service. So we wanted our ad campaign to feature the familiar faces of locals depicting those 3G features that will benefit them the most.”

PRESS RELEASE:
CELLULARONE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
(Hamilton, Bermuda June 29th, 2009) CellularOne today announced that it will mark its 10 year Anniversary by organising in store games, prizes and giveaways all week, beginning Monday, June 29 and ending Friday, July 3. Thousands of dollars in prizes are to be won, while enjoying cup cakes and coffee too.
CellularOne prides itself on its historic trend of delivering technology to Bermudians ahead of their competitors. This year, as the company celebrates its 10th Anniversary on July 2, they reflect on some of the key milestones, and island “firsts” that they have achieved along the way:
1999: Became the first competitor to the incumbent wireless company in Bermuda,
introducing integrated voice-mail and seamless roaming;
2000: Developed ATM bill payment in conjunction with Butterfield Bank;
2002: Introduced online billing, text messaging and email between handsets;
2003: Established wireless Internet access for laptops via a data card with speeds of up to
153 kbps; unlimited wireless home phone service (The Yak)
2005: Offered broadband Internet access for home computers, laptops, cell phones and
PDAs at network speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps; first 3G network in Bermuda
2007: Launched a Push-To-Talk phone and introduced a broadband wireless modem with
built-in WI-FI
2009: Introduced Video Calling on your cell phone.
During CellularOne’s inception in 1999, the objective was to irrevocably change the face of cellular telecommunications in Bermuda, providing a new competitive standard that would eventually see the island’s technology levels elevated to those enjoyed in the United States, Europe and the rest of the world. They found their success in the company’s “first-to-market” positioning, borne of the realisation that there was a great deal of pent-up demand for better quality service and technology amongst customers of their competitor. Through this, they recognised a market niche that could be filled with the delivery of innovation, competition and feature-rich products to the island.
CellularOne’s CEO Kurt Eve said: “For us, the true hallmark of success was becoming profitable in the first 18 months that we were in business, when our initial forecast for this milestone was three years. This early profitability enabled us to invest more fully in the technology needs of the island and has helped us to realise our vision of becoming the gold standard of telecommunications in Bermuda and build a successful organisation that now provides jobs for 50 Bermudians.”
Mr. Eve added: “Market changes are inevitable. But in this age of well-informed consumers, the most successful companies are those who not only understand trends in customers’ needs, but who can anticipate them and bring to market products and services that meet those demands in a timely fashion.”
The company recently underwent a brand refresh exercise and the tagline “Something Extraordinary!..” was developed in conjunction with employees to express the quality of service that CellularOne strives to offer its customers. A new addition to CellularOne’s existing dynamic team of managers is recently appointed COO Frank Amaral. With four locations across the island, the company’s extraordinary service claim does not stop with technology innovations. It also means the best customer service available in Bermuda, a value that is held throughout the organisation and is one of the most important tenets of its success today.
CellularOne’s vision was initially conceived in 1994 when company principals, Kurt Eve and Michael Leverock, applied for a public telecommunications license. Mr. Eve and Mr. Leverock recognised a need for competition in the marketplace and, in the end, the combination of their passion for technology and their tenacity won: Bermuda Digital Communications, the holding company for CellularOne, was offered a license to enter the cellular communications market. By 1999, they had built their first network and ventured into competition with Bermuda Telephone Company; the business that they built is today widely respected as the leader in cellular telecommunications technology and service in Bermuda.
However, the company was not established without challenge and the pair had to overcome a number of hurdles even before the company was launched. Mr. Eve said, “Aside from obtaining financing and designing a communications network that would surpass consumer expectations, the greatest challenge we had to overcome was the public perception of the company’s ability to succeed and people’s acceptance of CellularOne as a serious contender. With 10 good years behind us, we have long quashed that perception.”
